Products and services
In addition to its role as a research institute and part of various expert and industry networks, AZT also acts as a provider of internationally established products and services, with which we have now built up many very good and stable customer relationships.
International and manufacturer-independent:
The AZT paint calculation system
At the beginning of the 1970s, AZT began to develop a model- and manufacturer-independent paint calculation system in order to provide those involved in the refinishing process, such as workshops and experts, with a neutral basis for a transparent and therefore comprehensible paint repair cost calculation for all those involved in the event of damage.
All items for time and material contained in the calculation system are based on time studies that have been recorded and evaluated by AZT according to REFA methodology in repair practice. All common repair methods, repair techniques and materials are taken into account in accordance with the current state of the art and the generally recognized rules of technology. The working time values and country-specific material cost information provided by AZT paint costing system take into account all common process sequences that occur in repair practice, which guarantee a high-quality and flawless repair finish, regardless of the brand and model and the paint finish of the vehicle to be repaired.
The AZT paint calculation system has developed into the leading international manufacturer-independent standard for the calculation of painting work. It is now used in more than 40 countries worldwide, and the trend is rising. Over 5000 vehicle models are currently mapped in the AZT paint calculation system and the system is continuously maintained and further developed.
These values are available to users on the market via the calculation software of several providers. We cooperate with Solera - Audatex, Autovista Group - Eurotax, DAT, GT-Motive and CAB, among others. The calculation systems are used in particular by experts, garages, Allianz companies and other insurers.
The user of the AZT paint calculation system receives:
- all necessary working time and indexed effort information quickly and easily,
- calculation values for the car, SUV and van models recorded in the system,
- a painting time in hours that matches the scope of the repair and
- the current painting material costs incurred in the respective national currency.

Consulting. Based on experience: Consulting for vehicle manufacturers
German motor insurance companies use a so-called type classification system to calculate the insurance premiums for motor vehicle liability and comprehensive insurance.
The type classes reflect the claims and accident statistic of each vehicle model registered in Germany. The type class is therefore the most important information that insurance companies take into account when calculating insurance premiums, ahead of other tariff features. The lower the average claims costs of a vehicle model, the lower the type class and the lower the insurance premium will be.
But how do you get to a type class for a new vehicle model for which you cannot draw on past experience?
For models that are new to the market, the expected repair costs for comprehensive insurance are determined on the basis of crash tests that were developed under the leadership of the AZT. Through cooperation with insurance-financed repair research centers worldwide, standards have been created that are now used not only in Germany, but in many other markets around the world.
Thanks to decades of experience in working with both the German Insurance Association (GDV) and numerous vehicle manufacturers, AZT is an extremely competent and reliable partner in all aspects of vehicle type classification.
Depending on the respective project status at a vehicle manufacturer, all of our experience flows into our customized consulting services. Our services include crash performance, repair and costing, claims management, statistical analyses, theft protection, market standards and benchmarking.
Vehicle manufacturers benefit from the following AZT competencies in our consulting packages:
- Detailed expertise on the German insurance classification and type class system
- Comprehensive knowledge of the automotive and insurance market
- Over 50 years of experience in crash testing and repair research
- Individual consulting tailored to the customer's specific needs

Promoting knowledge transfer:
The AZT training
The dynamic change in vehicle technology is having a significant impact on motor insurance, risk assessment and the repair industry. At the same time, digitalization is enabling new processes in the areas of claims management and the preparation of expert reports. These developments pose particular challenges for experts working in the field of automotive technology and claims management, such as experts and workshops. Continuous education and training are key success factors for day-to-day practice.
Allianz has one of the largest expert organizations in the insurance industry, whose continuous and professional training and further education is one of the main tasks ofAZT. The approximately 250 Allianz experts are regularly trained at AZT through a comprehensive training program that covers classic vehicle repair topics, current trends in the automotive sector and the necessary skills in the area of customer service. This ensures a direct transfer of know-how from AZT research and other current sources into the daily claims processing and service for our customers. We also offer other experts individual training courses, both nationally and internationally.
- The diverse range of topics covers the following general areas, among others:
- Body repair and painting
- Basics and processes in damage assessment and calculation
- Modern vehicle technology, e.g. high-voltage vehicles, driver assistance systems and IT security
- Training on other types of vehicles and special vehicles, such as trucks, motorhomes, agricultural vehicles or classic cars
AZT is also part of international expert networks and thus promotes the exchange of knowledge between Allianz automotive and claims experts. As part of this, AZT is the initiator and organizer of annual events such as "Train the Trainer" or the "AZT Summit", at which internationally relevant innovations and developments are discussed and best practice approaches in the field of claims management are presented.

AZT Technical information and repair examples
The results of the AZT's research work and cooperation with automobile and paint manufacturers are presented in the form of a loose-leaf collection. AZT offers these technical bulletins in the German Market (and only in German language) as a subscription, which can be ordered here.
In addition, a catalog of repair studies on vehicles that have been repaired according to timekeeping (REFA) and compared with the calculation according to the dent removal formula provides support in choosing the most professional and cost-effective repair method. These repair examples are also available by subscription (also only in German language).
In addition to the integration of the AZT information into the Audatex calculation system, it is also published on the information platform Repair-Pedia (Repair-Pedia - how it works).
