Launched in 2024, the Euro NCAP Safer Trucks programme has quickly become an award-winning initiative, recognised for its transparent, independent safety ratings of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). In its first two years, the programme has assessed nearly 30 truck models, highlighted critical safety gaps, and accelerated the adoption of advanced safety systems across the freight sector. In crashes involving heavy goods vehicles, around 90% of those killed are occupants of other vehicles or vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists. With freight transport responsible for the movement of approximately 95% of goods across the EU, the exposure and societal impact are significant. These figures underline the urgency of improving commercial vehicle safety on European roads.
As AZT, we bring a deep understanding of the connections between , security performance, and actual risk impacts in practice to the collaboration. We support corporate and commercial vehicle customers by not only offering them insurance solutions, but also helping them manage complex risks and optimize the safety of their fleets through data-driven insights. The goal is to develop customer-centric insurance solutions and promote road safety through safer vehicles on the roads.
Allianz's membership underscores the growing importance of linking independent safety assessment and insurance analysis. We contribute our expertise in risk trends and claims data, helping to broaden understanding of how safety technologies translate into real-world outcomes, ultimately informing both manufacturers and fleet operators about priority areas for improvement.
"We are delighted to welcome Allianz to the Safer Trucks programme. Their expertise in risk and casualty analysis adds a valuable new dimension to our multi-disciplinary approach. Safer Trucks is designed not only to benchmark safety performance but also to catalyse improvements in truck design and technology. By integrating risk insight from Allianz with our independent testing data, we aim to accelerate safety innovation across the commercial vehicle sector." Matthew Avery, Director of Strategic Development Euro NCAP
"Joining Euro NCAP’s Safer Trucks initiative aligns with our commitment to reducing road risk through evidence-based insights. We believe that independent safety ratings, tied to real-world risk data, can influence both purchasing decisions and the development of safer vehicle technologies. Allianz is proud to support this important work,to help fleet operators make informed choices that protect drivers and other road users and to offer them tailored and risk-based insurance solutions." Matthias Trüstedt , Head of Global P&C at Allianz SE
"Our accident research shows that modern safety systems in trucks can significantly reduce the number of serious accidents. In addition to protecting life, avoiding accidents brings economic benefits for fleet operators, because a fleet with lower repair and downtime costs is more efficient, offers better working conditions for drivers, and has significantly lower insurance premiums. Through our cooperation with Euro NCAP, we see excellent opportunities to use our combined expertise to improve the market penetration of safety systems that are already available and that contribute to accident prevention." Christian Sahr, Managing Director of AZT
Allianz’s involvement reflects a broader trend of collaboration between safety assessors, insurers, manufacturers, and fleets, a coalition increasingly seen as essential to delivering measurable improvements in commercial vehicle safety.
